Jody M Lutz, Owner/Craftsman of Stellar Drums & Hoops was kind enough to let me take this drum home...I have named this drum: The "LUTZ" for the record.
I was so taken by this drum over two years ago and wanted to buy it. But Jody, being the high quality craftsman he is, was reluctant to let me do so as he felt the drum had not yet been perfected. So I ended up getting a hard Maple Longo.
I saw Jody this year at the Chicago Drum Show and again commented on The "LUTZ" and how I would love to record it. Jody being a man of few words simply said..."Tell you what...on your way out...just take er." So I did!
Here is the results of my recordings on this beautiful drum. The microphone used was a Peluso 2247 LE. (Except for the last movie...that was not treated in the Studio...and only the on camera mic was used.)
The Peluso was set in front of the "LUTZ" about two feet away...waist high. No EQ was used in post...only very little compression/Limiting and just a touch of reverb.
Low and high tuning...muffling (One Moon Gel piece) and with no muffling...wide open.
The "LUTZ" is 5 and 3/4" X 14"
The wood on this drum is:
Center Shell = Curly Soft Maple All red colored wood = Blood wood Bearing edges = Hard Maple with Walnut Stripes
Heads on this recording: Batter: Evans Power Center Reverse Dot Coated Snare head: Evans Genera Reso 200 Snares: "Blasters" by Puresound

I found this drum to be full of snap if hit hard...yet warm and throaty...throughout the recording process I was very impressed with the evenness of tone and color. This drum would be fantastic for latin and jazz...yet with a single ply head tuned high would also make a great blast beat drum. Just a lovely wood sound through and through.
I like the "LUTZ" a LOTZ!
